Hi All
I have just returned from a birding trip in Far North QLD over two weeks with
some exciting birds seen and photographed so I thought I would share this with
anyone interested.
The main purpose of the trip was a 4 day Iron Range tour with Chook Crawford.
Before departing for the Iron Range, we spent a day around Yungaburra where we
photographed Red-rumped swallow, Barn swallow, Ruff and nesting Pied monarchs
provided a great start to the trip.
Next day, we flew out to the Iron Range. The 4 day trip produced great birds
such as Red-bellied Pitta(the jewel in the crown), Northern Scrub Robin,
Fawn-breasted Bowerbird, nesting Eclectus parrots, nesting Yellow-billed
Kingfisher, Yellow-legged Flycatcher, Chestnut-breasted cuckoo, Red-cheeked
parrot, Palm Cockatoo, Frilled-necked monarch, Marbled frogmouth, Green-backed
HE, Fig Parrot,Tawney-breasted HE, Buff-breasted paradise Kingfisher, Tropical
scrubwren & White-faced robin. We also saw Trumpet manucode, Magnificant
riflebird and Black-winged Monarch but I missed the photos on those three
species(an excuse to go back!). This is just to name a few! We basically got
all endemics but missed the Spotted Whistling ducks! I cannot recommend a tour
up there with Chook enough!
Upon returning, we spent time a week around Cairns, Kingfisher park and Ingham
where we picked up Rufous Owl, Cassowary at two places(Etty bay and Cassowary
House), Superb fruit Dove, Red-necked crake, Blue-faced parrot Finch, Bush hen,
Tooth-billed Bowerbird, Chowchilla, Fernwren, Mountain thornbill, Atherton
scrubwren, White-browed robin, Zitting cisticola and a magnificent spotlighting
tour with Alan Gillanders around Atherton which produced fantastic views of
eastern Grass Owl and Lesser Sooty owl.
No wonder Far North QLD is one of David Attenborough’s favourite spots in the
world!
Regards and I hope you enjoy the report!
