hello all,

had a great morning's birding at Mt Lewis earlier today with friend Judy Leitch
from the Gold Coast.

some interesting highlights included some very close encounters with many great
species...
the list was pretty good for just a few hours, some of the highlights included:
a Red-legged Pademelon within 1mtr; Musky Rat-Kangaroo; Tooth-billed Bowerbird;
Spotted Catbird; Fernwren; Atherton, Large-billed & Yellow-throated Scrubwrens;
Superb Fruit-, Wompoo Fruit-, Brown Cuckoo- & Emerald Doves; Scaly-breasted
Lorikeet; Aust King Parrot; Azure & Buff-breasted Paradise- Kingfishers;
Bower's & Little Shrike-thrush; Bridled Honeyeater; Pale-yellow Robin; Shining
Bronze-Cuckoo; a lone White-throated Needletail overhead; Noisy Pitta; Mountain
Thornbill; Black-faced & Spectacled Monarchs; Barred Cuckoo-shrike; Victoria's
Riflebird...etc...
BUT the real highlight for me was a lone Brush-Turkey with a PURPLE collar!!!
yes, a member of the Cape York race 'purpureicollis' here in the Wet
Tropics...truly amazing!! luckily Judy managed a rough record pic showing the
collar too...

we stopped in at Lake Mitchell on the way back to Cairns & added a pair of
Cotton Pygmy-Geese, Brolga, White-winged Triller, Pacific Heron, & Black Swan
amongst other species...

not a bad morning indeed.
cheers for now,

martin cachard,
cairns
