This is the sorry tale of the iconic Gurneys Pitta in Thailand, going from its 
rediscovery after being apparently extinct, to being for all intents extinct 
again, in just 28 years. Its demise is entirely due to human activity and inept 
conservation measures.

It is thought that there is a reasonable population of Gurneys in Myanmar, but 
they are also under threat from human activity.

For me the plight of Gurneys Pitta is very sad, as it was the first species of 
Pitta I had seen.

The plight of Gurneys Pitta carries a warning for similar rarities in 
Australia, such as the Night Parrot.
