I am presently visiting Cairns and have been regularly checking the owl on an
almost daily basis for the past week.

There are two sites close to each other on the Cairns Esplanade.
a) diagonally opposite Maccies near the lagoon, are two Telstra public phones
in the huge tree above the phones high against the canopy.
b) walk from that previous location south towards a red-roof council building.
On the Fogarty Park end of the building are two trees. Their canopies met with
a broad opening between as a footpath. Has been seen in the more southern of
the two trees.
This is a large Rufous Owl.

There has been talk of another Rufous Owl in Cairns near the Port Authorities
building opposite the Conference Centre. Under a large fig tree was the remains
of a Pied Imperial Pigeon. Possibly the female?

If in doubt met with the "4 o'clock club" on the Esplanade near the RSL. This
is an informal group who regularly gather between 4-5pm daily to monitor the
waders.

Also check the web page Cairns Birding for recent sightings.

Cheers Burney
