From your email address, I think you are at Charles Sturt University, but they have a lot of campuses (Sydney, Wagga, Bathurst, ....).

Powerful Owls can take Greater Gliders, so they would definitely be able to take a possum. I have seen them roosting near Melbourne with half a glider (presumably ready to take to the female at dusk). Of course, it may not be a bird ....
