 Hi Jenny and others
As Bob Green has intimated, there is no need to invoke the immigration
hypothesis to explain flocks of 2000+ Magpie Geese in Victoria. That is now the
size of the sw Vic - se SA population and is indicative of the success of a
re-introduction program initiated by the Victorian Fisheries and Wildlife Dept
during the late 1960s. Most of the time the population is highly dispersed, but
when they aggregate for breeding at Bool Lagoon, or at drought refuges such as
Lake Yambuk, we get an indication of the total population size - at least 2000
and possibly as many as 4000 birds.
