Looks like the Ionospheric Prediction Service (IPS) may be on the list for
budget cuts. The IPS is a valuable resource for Australians. It does not just
send you alerts so you can see those pretty aurorae. The IPS service that is
most valuable for Australians, is to provide information on ionospheric
conditions, so that shortwave radio telephone users can select the most
suitable frequency for various times of day. Shortwave radio telephony is still
an important communications resource for many who live and work in inland
Australia, not to mention birders. Sat phones are good, but they are not a
replacement for SWRT. It would be sad to see the IPS disappear due to budget
cuts.
