David Webb has sent me photos of a Peregrine Falcon that he and his friend
Keith Hutton saw when following up reports of a Grey Falcon at Barrenbox Swamp,
near Griffith, NSW on 18 March 2010. It is an adult Siberian Peregrine race
calidus. Note that is four years ago but I think this record is of such
significance it deserves some attention especially as it appears that this bird
was initially, but not unreasonably, reported as a Grey Falcon. The Siberian
Peregrine in adult plumage is a very distinctive taxon and is a long distance
migrant that has previously been seen on Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling)
Islands and there are several records from Ashmore Reef. This however, is the
first from mainland Australia proper although there is reason to suspect that
they have occurred in the Kimberley.
