Hi Tom
Yes, I've seen Masked Owls on posts, twice. Once south of Eden in southern NSW. 
It was on a post as we drove by, we stopped thinking it was a boobook or 
something, it's upperparts were so dark, then when we stopped & looked back, it 
turned it's head revealing it as a Masked Owl. Face had that brownish cast & we 
could see it's big stout legs with large talons. This was sometime in the early 
eighties. A few years later I saw another bird on a post, this time in East 
Gippsland. Again it was dark & quite easy to identify. So yes, it would be 
quite a possibility that your bird was a Masked!-Kevin Bartram
