A group of about 11 birders were fortunate to get fantastic views of the
Australian Painted-Snipe at Mt St Joseph Pond, Altona, late yesterday.
It showed a few times, mostly foraging inside the reeds, but it ventured
out onto the open mud several times, and made a ran along the edge of the
water at one point.

The bird was first seen on Thursday evening by David Richardson, who was
enjoying great views of a Lewin's Rail when he suddenly had a Painted-Snipe
as well in his scope! The Lewin's showed again yesterday morning, but not
last night. Spotless Crake(s) were popping in and out of the reeds, and we
heard Australian Spotted Crake calling towards dusk.
