Birdline Cocos Keeling Islands

Published sightings for the week ending 26 Jan 2014.

Thu 2 Jan Chinese Sparrowhawk Big house, Home Island, Cocos Islands
Seen 2,3,4 of January. ID not clinched until 4th of January, when Scott got perched views & I finally got photos of the bird in flight. Same individual as seen by Rohan Clarke, Geof Christie and Pam Jones 1/12/13. BARc submission is forthcoming.

Javan Pond Heron Southern end of Home Island on the lagoon side
1 pond heron flushed from the banana plantation, flew onto the tidal flats and started fishing alongside a Nankeen Night-Heron. Watched on and off for half an hour or so. Got good views, but bird fairly skittish, despite this managed to get reasonable photos. A small, mostly white heron, with a chestnut back, identifying it as a pond heron. Scott who is familiar with both Javan & Chinese Pond-Herons, identified this as a Javan Pond Heron because of the buffy patches over it's neck, indicative of breeding plumage, intermixed with streaking of a non-breeding bird. Record pending a BARC submission.
