Sun 12 Jan      Australian Little Bittern, Baillon's Crake, Spotless Crake 
North Lakes, The Grove
Fine, mild morning with 205 cloud cover and light breezes. Australian Little 
Bittern (1) In the reeds to the left of the picnic area. Two brief views, once 
of the head and beak down at the water's edge and then of its rear view as it 
moved across the reeds showing the rufous neck, black back and light wing 
patch. Baillon's Crake (1) same reeds as the Bittern. Spent some time on the 
lilly pads Spotless Crake (1) same reeds as the Bittern.

Single Bird circling over canopy at 1.30 pm

Sat 11 Jan      Turquoise Parrot, Hooded Robin, Diamond Firetail Old 
Wallangarra Road
A couple of Turquoise Parrots seen at intersection of Old Wallangarra Rd and 
Hickling Ln. Hooded Robin was about 100m up Hickling Ln, with the Diamond 
Firetails seen between Hickling Ln and the highway. Plenty of other nice birds 
around also.

        Sooty Owl Lookout Road, Main Range NP
One bird found shortly after the road first enters the rainforest. A distant 
Powerful Owl heard earlier in the evening and Southern Boobook with at least 
two fledglings seen at the Manna Gum campground.

        Black Kite Dowse Lagoon, Sandgate
A single bird circled low over the canopy at the northern end for a few minutes 
then disappeared north, good close views.

Hoary-headed Grebe (1) seen at southern end of the dam Pectoral Sandpiper (1) 
seen clearly by 4 of 5 observers through scope on sandbar about 50m out

Fri 10 Jan      Long-billed Corella Delaney's Creek Primary School wetlands
Long-billed Corella (3) three corellas with areas of pink/red plumage around 
face,throat and upper breast, long curved bill. Feeding on ground between two 
small farm dams, observed from roadside.

Fri 10 Jan      Yellow-throated Miner; Squatter Pigeon Eungella Dam
Yellow-throated Miners around the campsite; Dezmond Wells told me after I 
reported this species here in November that this represents a 400km range 
extension, so we made sure to get some photo's this time! Squatter Pigeons were 
a nice surprise as well.

Single male Regent Bowerbird flew across road, Paradise Riflebird heard on 
Neurum Rd. Noisy Pitta (2) and Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove (3) heard during Mill 
Rainforest walk

Fine but overcast. Major Mitchell's Cockatoo (1) Being chased by 2 Australasian 
Magpies.

        Pectoral Sandpiper Cross Road Dam, Lower Tenthill
5 observers. Overcast skies, pleasant temperature. Permission sought from 
owners to access site. Pectoral Sandpiper (1) Viewed through scope on sand bar 
in dam. Was difficult to locate as there were many Sharp-tailed Sandpipers 
present which were quite flighty.

        Pacific baza Childers
At the Apple tree creek camping ground 6km north of the town a baza in nesting 
in a tall eucalyptus tree located in the childrens playground.

        Little Bittern, Australian Painted Snipe, Spotless Crake, Baillon's 
Crake, Little Grassbird Parklakes Wetland, Bli Bli
This wetland continues to present good birds. The above spp recorded plus both 
spp of whistling ducks and a good variety of other common spp.

Thu 9 Jan       Oriental Cuckoo Anstead Bushland Reserve
Birding with Ross & Cathy Smith, Vince Budjera & Jack Whiting. Fine, very mild 
morning with 80% cloud cover and a light shower of rain Oriental Cuckoo (1) 
Female. Seen about 08:15 from the bitumen path leading up from the second 
carpark along Hawkesbury Road just before the end of the bitumen on the way to 
Sugar's Quarry, near the large dirt mound and south of the powerlines.

Thu 9 Jan       Buff Banded Rail, Pale Vented Bush Hen and Lewin's Rail 
Kingfisher Park, Kenmore
Sighted 2 adult Buff Banded Rails plus one juvenile (poor quality photo) - 
heard and sighted 2 Pale Vented Bush Hens - all behind Twilight Street. Heard 2 
Lewin's Rails calling, briefly sighted a chick (possibly 2) in the swamp at the 
soccer fields - did not manage to photograph.

Lagoon dry but lots of good birds still here. Brown Songlark very common,

        Pacific Black Duck-Mallard-Hybrid Kumbartcho Sanctuary, Eatons Hill
Previously sighted on this lagoon in November and then identified by the 
Kumbartcho birders as a hybrid. This time with a number of Pacific Black Ducks.

tree outside the barn where first sighted in December

        Fork Tailed Swift Lake Eden North Lakes Qld 4509
I've photographed Lake Eden for over 10 years and have never seen these 
before...it was a bad day for photographing and will attempt again 
tomorrow...the lake is now full after a long almost empty spell of about 5 
months...

        Powerful Owl Mill Rainforest Board Walk, Mt Mee State Forest
One Powerful Owl roosting in the open in a tree overhanging the creek this 
morning close to midday. Unfortunately I only had a small compact point and 
shoot camera at hand otherwise good photos might have been obtained. When 
commencing the loop part of the walk it is the first creek crossing which has 
the footbridge over the creek with no balustrade. The owl was roosting on the 
left hand side, far bank as you step onto the bridge - very easy to spot.

Tue 7 Jan       Lewin's Rail, Pale-vented Bush-hen Rafting Ground Reserve
Five Lewin's Rails detected, from two areas along Moggill Creek, at low water. 
Two were seen at the water's edge, one bathing (video obtained). Bush-hens 
calling nearby. Habitat: weeds, and some native plants, forming dense cover on 
creek banks.

Mon 6 Jan       Major Mitchell's Cockatoo Moggill State Forest
Assumed escape, but one also reported nearby at Blacksoil on 10th January by 
Sandra Gallienne - same bird? MODERATORS NOTE (SG) Major Mitchell's Cockatoos 
have been reported from the Frazer 1' Cell via Eremaea lists since December 
2012 with the comment that they have been in the area for 25 years and raised 
several broods. The last sighting from that cell on 01/01/2014 indicated that 
there were 7 birds in total.

Three circling over garden mid am for a few mins before drifting off west. Also 
Black Kite over, a bird that has become scarce again locally after last year's 
influx.

Late afternoon visit found Russet-tailed Thrush (2), Australian Logrunner (2) 
and 4 calling Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove.

Roost hardly utilised this morning, birds refusing to land. Small group of 
Terek Sandpipers stayed briefly in company with Grey-tailed Tattler

Sumners Road)
Two Lewin's Rails and 4 Spotless Crakes calling in dense weedy cover, with 
bulrush adjacent in the intertidal zone, beside Brisbane River. Near western 
end of Sumners Road.

Thu 2 Jan       Pacific Baza Kingfisher Park, Kenmore
This is the first time that I have seen a Pacific Baza in the park. Due to the 
dense bush I couldn't get any closer to get a decent photo.
