A roadside snipe

G'day

I came across a snipe (presumably Latham's) feeding on the grassy verge of the Boonah - Rathdowney Rd (SEQ) on the 29th of December. It was about 6.30 am and it was poking about in association with a PF Swamphen. It was nowhere near a water body and it appeared to be probing the ground with its bill.

Equally strange, I came across a Koala crossing the road five minutes up the road.

I was on my way to a 4 day bushwalk taking in Barney Creek, Lindsay Creek and the Ballow Rim. The cicadas were pretty noisy in the box forest sections, so listening to bird calls was a bit difficult. I did however see 3 or 4 Noisy Pittas along the way.

I also came across a carpet snake swallowing what was possibly a potoroo (photographed), a platypus clambering about in shallow water, and two Southern Angle-headed Dragons (one bit me when I was working my way through a vine tangle and grabbed the trunk of a small tree - I think I must have put my finger in front of its mouth). I also had a Bush rat coming into my tent on New Years Eve and recorded the calls of a colony of Philoria loveridgei (small ground-dwelling frogs).

As always, it was magic having quality time on the Macpherson Range and camping in the nothofagus.

Regards, Laurie.
