Banyule Swamp is improving from the bird-watcher's point of view, as the water-level has fallen, and some mud is now visible on the margins. This afternoon I had hopes of Latham's Snipe, but no luck. However there were two Black-winged Stilts (first for ages), and a Buff-banded Rail skulking under vegetation at the north end. Also two Black Swans (first seen for a while), plus Black Duck, Chestnut Teal, Australasian Grebes, Hoary-headed Grebes and Coots. Also 5 Silver Gulls. It is good to see Water Ribbon plants continuing to spread around the edges. They were wiped out by the Big Drought and hungry birds, but are now regenerating well and should continue to provide shelter and food for water-life.
