Happy New Year to all birding-aus readers also from Finland!
Not much to report from here. The winter has been exceptionally warm thus
far, and even though I live in the northern part of Finland, we lost the
little snow we had left just after Christmas (unfortunately it was a
"black" Christmas in most parts), but luckily had some fresh snow on New
Year's eve to bring some light into the darkness.
The first bird for me was a Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) on
my bird feeder, and two lovely European Crested Tits (Lophophanes
cristatus) waiting in line. Other birds were a Great Tit (Parus major), a
Blue Tit (Parus caeruleus) and a Common Magpie (Pica pica) without
forgetting the resident 3 Eurasian Red Squirrels. Still 2-3 months to go
until spring finally kicks in gear - seems like forever at the moment.
This winter is predicted to be good for Aurora Borealis, and even though
we've had a few decent displays until now, it's been too cloudy to see
anything in 3 weeks. Here's hoping that the skies will clear out and the
fires in the sky will lit up.
