Emerald Dove Wangara Street, Aranda
An Emerald Dove has been visiting a work colleague's back yard in Aranda and he has seen it either in the morning or evening each day since Tuesday. This morning I went around at 7:00 am and saw the bird. It is clearly attracted to the feed in the chicken run, but the back yard itself is well vegetated and the dove makes good use of the dense cover in places. When it has been seen flying away from the yard it has always been in the same direction so it may have another nearby preferred hang-out. It is a male of the east coast race (rogersi, previously chrysochlora) and judging by the reddish tinge to the neck is from the southern end of this sub-species' range. This is at least consistent with the possibility of it being a wild bird. It is wary but relatively approachable, but this is a characteristic of this species. I haven't yet been able to determine if or how commonly this species might be kept in captivity, especially in Canberra.
