Dear Ian,
I spent two fantastic days at REGUA, a reforestation project about 2 hours from
Rio in 2007. Excellent birding in endangered lowland Atlantic forest and the
Serra dos Organs mountains. When i was there guiding was included in the price
of acccommodation ( as were free post-birding caipirinhas). The are a few other
places not too far away, such as the Serra dos Tucanos lodge run by an expat
English birder. Further afield (3 hours from Rio) is the outstanding Itataia
National Park.
Within Rio, the Botanic gardens def worth a visit. Tijuca Nat Park offers some
excellent birding, but you might need a guide to get the best out of the area.
I wrote a report with some digiscoped pics and its on the web at
http://www.cs.adelaide.edu/~ianr/Birding.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Ian
