Last Wednesday 21st August a guest and myself were lunching at
Cooktown Crossing on the Mitchell River about 35 kn west of Mt. Carbine.
At the time there were about forty Black Kites circling above the river
to the height of one hundred metres catching insects of some type with
eloquent ease.
We watched this event for a half hour.
At that time a Grey Falcon ventured through the loose flock as if
to see what was happening. A Black Kite came in from above and moved the
falcon away from the food resource.
Within a few minutes the Grey Falcon returned and another Kite
again moved in on the falcon from above. It then disappeared away from
the immediate area.
This unexpected sighting coincides with a huge general movement
through the region as food diminishes in western Queensland with up to
four thousand Black Kites at Mareeba Refuse Area some weeks back.
Other itinerant species having moved to the area we saw during the
day were over two hundred budgerigars and fifty plus Diamond Doves.
