Hooded Plover (Thinornis rubricollis) (1) 7 adults plus one immature seen along
waters edge near eastern end of Middleton
Spotted Harrier (Circus assimilis) (1) One seen patrolling near Lifesavers
lookout. Marsh Harriers seen fairly regulary in this area. First time Spotted
Harrier seen here.
Red-capped Plover (Charadrius ruficapillus) (1) Eight seen associating with
Hooded Plovers above.
Silver Gull (Larus novaehollandiae) (1) Usual 40-50 birds seen in this area
Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus longirostris) (1) 6- 10 birds seen
Sooty Oystercatcher (Haematopus fuliginosus) (1) 6 birds
Pacific Gull (Larus pacificus) (1) 4 Adults near Middleton
Red-necked Stint (Calidris ruficollis) (1) 3 birds towards Middleton.

Black Kite (Milvus migrans) (1) According to our neighbours a very large black
kite has been hanging around for a few days, and they reckon it is old (not
sure how). We saw it flying just a few metres over the ground and it looked
bigger than the biggest of the local brown falcons.
We added species 71 to our list, which now includes 8 raptores, but admittedly
1 of those flew over at considerable height and so far another 3 have been
one-offs.
Bluebonnet (Northiella haematogaster) (2) Bluebonnets occasionally put in an
appearance, but not very often.

Yellow-plumed Honeyeater (Lichenostomus ornatus) (2) at least two birds
foraging low in pink gum woodland located on private property adjoining Altona
Landcare Reserve.

Location: Brown's Road, Monarto
Tawny-crowned Honeyeater (Phylidonyris melanops) (2) One bird seen well at the
Highland Road (N) end of the reserve, in edge of the low mallee adjacent to the
old pasture.
One bird seen less well in Callitris on the N side of the circuit track round
the old mallee
I think this is the first record for this species at Brown's Road.
Yellow-plumed Honeyeater (Lichenostomus ornatus) (1) In the large gums just N
of the old bee-keepers tank.
Not often seen at Brown's Road.
European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) (2) Two in a puddle where the entrance
track from Brown's road meets the circuit track.
Not often seen at Brown's Road
Diamond Firetail (Stagonopleura guttata) (15+) 5 or so in the same puddle as
the European Goldfinches, and the rest scattered in different parts of the
park. Some were paired off.
Apart from the named species there was a nice mix of the usual suspects; thirty
two species in all.

Location: Kangaroo Island
Fairy Tern (Sterna nereis) (25) initially foraging -diving into shallow sea at
Bay of Shoals - then late roosting with similar number of Crested Terns at high
tide at Cape Rouge, KI, 26 June 2013. Pleasantly surprised to see this number
of birds at this time of year.
Royal Spoonbill (Platalea regia) (10) Flew over Busby Islet CP, KI, 26 June
2013. Shortly afterwards several birds with breeding plumes seen standing
amongst White Ibis at breeding rookery on S side of islet. Small numbers
commenced breeding here past few years and expect them to do same this year.
Common Blackbird (Turdus merula) (1) calling from dense paperbark forest
fringing Rush Lagoon, KI, 24 June 2013. Common in urban areas on KI; less
common but also occurring in riparian forest, dense stringybark/melaleuca
scrubs and now seemingly colonising paperbark swamps.
White-faced Storm-Petrel (Pelagodroma marina) (2) 2 beachwashed specimens at
Vivonne Bay, KI, 5 June 2013

Bassian Thrush (Zoothera lunulata) (1) at start of walking trail in Sugar Gum
forest at Snake Lagoon, Flinders Chase NP, KI, 5 May 2013.
Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) (1) perched on post at Flinders Chase NP airstrip,
alongside Shackle Road, KI, 5 May 2013. Very unusual to see at this location,
however two large dams in mallee scrubland nearby.
Shy Heathwren (Hylacola cauta) (10) throughout post fire endemic KI Mallee Ash
E remota (burnt 1997) in FCNP, KI, 5 May 2013. This whipstick mallee
association occurs across ironstone plateau of interior areas of park.
Western Whipbird (Psophodes nigrogularis) (1) calling briefly in Euc remota
whipstick mallee-ash scrub in East Gosse Lands, Flinders Chase NP, KI, 5 May
2013
Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus) (5) two small groups in Euc remota
whipstick mallee-ash scrub in E and W Gosse Lands, Flinders Chase NP, KI, 5 May

Double-banded Plover (Charadrius bicinctus) (11) 3 with Red-capped Plovers and
Red-necked Stints, E shore of Rush Lagoon, KI, 24 June 2013. Habitat a lush
carpet of Sarcocornia, Frankenia and grasses alongside recently filled brackish
paperbark lagoon.
8 roosting with Red-capped Plovers and Red-necked Stints at Cape Rouge, KI, 26
June 2013. Several sported reasonably distinct double bands; surprisingly, one
still retained bright breeding plumage bands.
Banded Stilt (Cladorhynchus leucocephalus) (1220) 20 standing in shallows at
recently filled Rush Lagoon, KI, 24 June 2013. Half had distinct chestnut
bands; others with prominent traces of; one almost completely without band.
ca 1200 feeding across recently filled Wisanger Salt Lagoon, KI, 26 June 2013.
Most were swiming; some standing; were in loose association with small number
of Avocets and Black-winged Stilts.
Red-necked Stint (Calidris ruficollis) (230) 150 forage along lush wet E shore

Red-necked Avocet (Recurvirostra novaehollandiae) (25) 22 were standing in
tight roosting huddle in shallows of Wisanger Salt Lagoon, KI, 26 June 2013;
another 3 were swimming/foraging with Banded Stilts in centre of lagoon.
Pied Cormorant (Phalacrocorax varius) (c 500) About 200 nests, mostly in
Nitrebushes at W end of Busby Islet CP, KI, 26 June 2013. Well advanced with
some young already fledged; others about to - and some nests with large young.
Less birds breeding this year - usually active rookeries on southern side of
islet empty.
Black-faced Cormorant (Phalacrocorax fuscescens) (c1500) About 600 nests,
mostly in Nitrebushes at E and W end of Busby Islet CP, KI, 26 June 2013.
Breeding in full swing with nests containing a wide range of occupants - from
adults incubating eggs or very small young through to mostly medium to very
large downy chicks. Nesting not as advanced as Pied Cormorant. Less birds
breeding this year - usually active rookeries on southern side of islet empty.
Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) (c100) Assembling to breed in
Nitrebush colonies on Busby Islet CP, KI, 26 June 2013. Small number of birds
have commenced incubation of eggs; however, most are still courting/copulating
and playing with nests. Most birds assembled in rookery on S side; smaller
number on N side of Islet.
Straw-necked Ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis) (2) One standing within Australian
White Ibis breeding rookery on S side of Busby Islet CP, KI, 26 June 2013.
Small numbers commenced breeding here in recent years.
