I have not used Vanguard Binos. As always with binoculars I recommend trying them out for yourself as binocular choice can be quite personal, Bintel I see stocks them now, so you should be able to call in and try them out.

They seem to have quite a range of prices, I'd suggest staying away from the very cheap roof prism styles (straight barrels) as the prisms in that style of binocular require very good coatings to get the best performance, the porro prism style (bent barrels) are more forgiving. The advantage of the roof prism style is they are easier to waterproof. The Wikipedia article on binoculars explains some of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binoculars Some of the very cheap roof prisms may not have phase coatings.

If you are prepared to spend a little more then look at the Nikon Monarch DCF range, very good for the price, the 8x36 are $379 and the 8x42 $499. If you want to spend less look at the Nikon porro prism models.
