when I lived down that way - this was the best book and I believe it still is
(and it's been updated):
Birds of Southern Africa
Ian Sinclair, Phil Hockey, & Warwick Tarboton
Illustrated by Peter Hayman and Norman ArlottIt covers the whole area except
Zambia but there are only a couple of additional species in southern Zambia -
such as Black-cheeked Lovebird.
You could go for:
Birds of Africa South of the Sahara: Second Edition also by Sinclair. But that
will have 100s of species that you won't see - so it could be confusing. I've
used the first suggestion in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana etc.
without any problems.
