the harriers are found in all open habitats in NZ because there is no
competition from other birds of prey as there is in Australia (the only other
bird of prey here is the NZ falcon). They do a lot of scavenging on roadside
kills as well. They are very very common here.

Hi,

We recently returned from a short holiday to New Zealand. We were surprised by
the apparent abundance of Swamp Harriers as well as their apparent abundance in
all types of habitat, from swamps and streams and even across large dry tussock
grass areas such as in Central Otago and the Little Desert area in the rain
shadow to the east of the central volcano area.

I was wondering whether the apparent abundance was real or only apparent, and
whether their habitat preference has broadened, possibly in response to reduced
competition due to the paucity of other raptors.

Does anyone have any information on this.

Cheers

Andrew
