I do not mean to over simplify (or sound too cynical) but in my opinion the 
answer to why do retailers charge so much for things in Australia is "because 
they can." The justification is profit. Australians have put up with high 
prices for years, but the global awareness that exists now has shown them how 
ridiculously over priced many things are here and that may be beginning to have 
an impact. We will see.
