Today I found a Black-tailed Native-hen at the southern end of Ewen Maddock
Dam on the Sunshine Coast. This species is extremely rare in south-east
Queensland. I am aware of a record from Redcliffe and would be interested in
hearing of any others in the region.
It is interesting to speculate why inland species such as Australian
Painted-Snipe, Black-tailed Native-hen and Red-kneed Dotterel are turning up
on the southern Queensland coast when there have been two bumper wet seasons
in succession in the outback, where water remains plentiful. Presumably this
is post-breeding dispersal but there seems to be no reason for the birds to
leave their favoured haunts at this time to head to the coast.
