I meant to say how sad we were to hear of this fire. We visited in July and although we did not find the hoped for species had rarely seen spinifex looking so healthy.

Graeme & Betty Horskins sent me this note which may be of interest to
anyone intending to look for Carpentarian Grasswrens in the near future -
it is bad news indeed, when the birds should be enjoying some sort of
recovery in their numbers.

Greetings John,

Graeme and I left Mt. Isa this morning very sad.
The following para I tried to sending to Birding-Aus explains why so sad.

"Sat. 11th. August 2012 we went out to McNamara's Road, the ******Lady
Loretta Mine Project Road****, 66km west of ****Mt.** **Isa**** ******

hoping to see the Carpentarian Grasswrens. Unfortunately the whole area
east of this road was burnt out and was still****

smouldering. Grader driver repairing road informed us that 3 days earlier
a wild fire had burnt for 30km along ****

McNamara's Road, for 30km inland to the east and for some km along the
Barkly Highway.

****

If the Grasswrens survived the fire then their habitat most certainly did
not."****

Betty & Graeme Horskins

The trees are scorched but more than likely sprout again but the ground
cover is gone.

I think the bird world needs to know to save a trip as its all burnt
black. I tried to send this

note to Birding-aus but they wanted Systems POP and computer stuff I have
no idea about.

Hence this e-mail to you as we know you will see fit to do what you will
with it please especially with

your wide bird people connections. We do hope you don't mind us
contacting you but we feel this news is important

to the birding community.

How long it will take the understory to recover we do not know.

We do hope the birds escaped to the west side of the road 'cause if they
didn't it could be a sad situation.

On a personal note - this is a bird trip we are doing Glen Waverley to
Rainbow Beach via Alice Springs. Only bird

people do silly things like go the long way around. Have some of our
"wants" and have missed on others.

Most "wants" are for me with a few for Graeme.

Hope this finds you well and warm? I am typing this sitting in the
sunshine and warmth at Winton.

Regards

Betty
