At least four Golden Bowerbirds are actively maintaining and decorating their
bowers. This is a bit early. Last year some birds did not start until
September. My guess is that this was due to the lack of food resulting from the
little blow we had early in the year. In 2010 there were birds active in April
also. I had a report that year from a reliable observer that a bird on his
property had not stopped from the 2009 season. Melicope broadbentiana is also
fruiting early this year in some places which may be another trigger to go with
the plentiful supply of fruit for food.
Another observer has told me he saw a female in the bower. This is VERY early.
Yesterday there was an Olive-backed Oriole in my Yungaburra garden which is
very early in the season and I think I heard a Little Friarbird along Petersen
Creek. Each of these species is more commonly seen after winter than before.
Square-tailed Kites are being seen very regularly in Atherton, along Leslie
Creek near the Curtain Fig and have been spotted in Mareeba.
Squatter Pigeons have become habituated at Granite Gorge. Where they were once
difficult to approach, now one has to be careful not to stand on the beggars!
Double-eyed Fig-Parrots, Barred Cuckoo-shrikes and fruit doves are visiting
fruiting fig trees in Yungaburra and in Atherton near the fire station.
