We recently returned from a successful birding trip in north-west Thailand,
between 12th and 28th March 2012. The guide collected us from Bangkok
Airport took us to some great birding locations and at the end of the trip
dropped us off at Chiang Mai Airport from where we caught a flight to
Bangkok then home to Sydney. The guide was exceptionally good at finding and
identifying a wide variety of birds, especially the small and difficult to
identify birds, and was able to keep costs down with good accommodation and
meals. Interesting places included birding around low coastal salt pans and
paddy fields near Phetchaburi, rainforest at Kaeng Krachan and higher
altitude vegetation at Doi Inthanon (with Mr Deangs accommodation and
meals). The guide recorded 438 bird species (about 1004 bird species in
Thailand) during the trip although some of these he heard but we did not
see. I recorded in my notebook 398 species of which I had seen 61 leaving
337 new species/ticks/lifers for me. Judy saw approximately the same number.
We also saw heaps of mammals and some reptiles and frogs.
Highlights for me were Kalij Pheasant, Painted and Milky Storks, Collared
Falconet, Barred Buttonquail, Spoon-billed Sandpiper, heaps of Drongos,
White-fronted Scops Owl, Tickells Brown Hornbill feeding red berries to
female in nest, heaps of Barbets, heaps of Woodpeckers including the
Speckled Piculet and Pygmy Woodpecker, Long-tailed Broadbill nesting, heaps
of Minivets, Ratchet-tailed Treepie, heaps of Bulbuls, heaps of Warblers
including lots of the Phylloscopidae warblers, heaps of Babblers of all
sorts, Laughing-thrushes, Spectacled Barwing, Spot-breasted Parrotbill,
Giant Nuthatch, Slaty-backed Forktail, lots of Flycatchers, Spot-winged
Grosbeak, Buntings etc etc. I can send a complete list if wanted.
