Hi all,
I hope you will indulge a slightly environmentalist post from the west.
Those interested in WA's Black-Cockatoos will be interested in some of the
presentations from a CCWA forum held on Wednesday, notably Ron Johnstone's (WA
Museum ornithologist) slides showing historical and recent cockatoo movements,
and nest tree requirements. This forum was inspired by recent Red-tailed
Black-Cockatoo (threatened subsp. naso) incursions into suburban Perth - and
increasing concerns this might be a symptom of habitat loss/degradation within
their normal range - but also highlighted the slow but inevitable decline in
Carnaby's and Baudin's populations.

In other news, some of you might remember the passionate piece on bird-o about
the FMG Cloudbreak expansion and Night Parrots. Well the WA EPA announced
provisional approval of the expansion a few days ago - see
http://www.epa.wa.gov.au/eia/epareports/Pages/1429-CloudbreakLifeofMineProject.aspx?pageID=3190&url=eia/epareports
Wade through Appendix 5 to the 'Fauna' section to read the numerous public
submissions and FMG's responses (a little flimsy to say the least) to concerns
re the Night Parrot. The good news, if you see it that way, is that the EPA
recommended that offsets include establishment of a Night Parrot research
program, including funding for ongoing PhD-level projects. Hopefully the
Minister will follow this through. Appeals close 22nd Feb.
Martin
