This issue is a real case for public education.
I recollect a dear kind old chap, who had begged a quantity of stale bread for the poor birds, saying "But there's nothing here for them to eat!" at a swamp swarming with natural tucker for birds. Banyule City Council (Melb. metropolitan area)has put up signs pointing out that ducks and water hens eat waterplants and bugs, and don't need bread. At Banyule Swamp people seem to observe this; at Wilson Reserve someone scratches out the 'not' quite often, as well as the sign which forbids dogs entering the water.

So often pigeon-feeders accuse those who criticise them of 'cruelty to birds'. A local person used to encourage pigeons, doves and Mynahs by chucking bread on the footpath. This of course attracted rats and mice. We had a Tawny Frogmouth perched waiting for the mice most evenings, until she was persuaded to desist.
