Hello all I have just returned from 3 days camped along the Einasleigh River,
between Mt Surprise & Georgetown in FNQ.At a site about 20kms upstream (south)
along this river from the bridge on the Gulf Devel Rd west of Mt Surprise, 2
adult Striated Herons were seen. It occurred to me at the time that this was a
most unusual location for this coastal & sub-coastal species.I have recorded
them well inland in places like Kakadu, but never this far inland in FNQ.This
site must be about 200km from the east coast & about 350km from the gulf coast,
as the proverbial heron flies. In all my trips to this area I have never come
across Striated Herons - however I have seen Black Bitterns out there quite
frequently, especially at the end of the wet season when they seem to head
inland & hunt the smaller rivers as the water levels start to drop.Has anyone
ever noticed Striated Herons in this area or in a similar situation elsewhere??
