How to get xeno-canto files onto an iPhone or iPod Touch
1. Open xeno-canto in your browser ( I use Firefox but the
instructions should be fine for other browsers)
2. Search for the species of interest, with luck a list of recordings
will appear
3. Right-click on the floppy disc symbol for the recording you want
4. From the pop-up menu select “Save Link As …” (“Save target as…” in
Internet Explorer)
5. Choose where to save the file and what to call it. I don’t change
the name of the file and I save to the desktop because you can then
find them quickly and you only need the file for a short period
6. Press ‘save’ to save!
7. Open iTunes
8. Select “File-New Playlist”
9. Call the new playlist something like “East Africa Birds”
10. Drag the xeno-canto mp3 files from your desktop onto the new playlist
icon
11. Sync your iPhone/iPod Touch
12. That’s it! If all went well you will be able to play the files on
your iPhone now and can now delete them from your desktop. They will
still be in your iTunes library on your computer.
How to get xeno-canto files onto a non-iPod mobile phone
Steps 1-6 from above
7. If your phone is sophisticated enough it should have storage space
that your computer can access. Read the phone manual to find out how
this is achieved on your model. My Nokia smartish phone comes with
software that runs on my PC. This communicates with the phone via
Bluetooth or a USB cable.
What I see is a phone music folder on my computer that I can drag
files to. These are transferred to the phone when I run the sync
program.
The files are then available for the music player on my phone.
Your phone will have something similar – read the manual.
