During every winter the Cranbourne Tip has the largest concentration of the
SE population of Pacific Gull known to mankind. They accumulate there in
very large numbers. All your birds would have been making there way to or
from the tip. The Esperance tip in WA can also have large numbers but of the
different ssp georgii.

Yesterday we were en route to Cranbourne Botanic Gardens.
I was surprised to see an adult Pacific Gull over the Freeway,
northwest of the shopping complex, and later another accompanied by two
much more likely Silver Gulls. Once at the Gardens, we saw five
immature PGs overhead. There was a strong SW wind blowing.
At least twenty years ago, I recall being very surprised indeed to
see a pair of PGs at the Cranbourne Tip - we presumed they had followed
the Silver Gulls up from Westernport - a note appeared in 'Australian
Bird Watcher.'
