Hi Simon,

This bird has been there since at least Saturday 18 June when I reported it
on Victorian Birdline. It seemed in perfect health back then and I saw it
fly in to the pier just after first light on the morning of the 19th. It
seemed perfectly free-moving then. Unless something has changed since then,
I would see no reason to take this bird into care- to me it was doing what
giant petrels do well, finding an easy source of food and exploiting it. I
think the biggest danger to the bird would be if a fisherman got aggro
because the bird took his fish as he reeled it in!

Do you know the appropriate people- wildlife carers or Parks Vic- that you
could pass the message on to or that I could get in touch with to offer the
opinion that unless the health of the bird has changed, it would be far more
distressing for it to be taken into care than it would to leave it in what
seemed to be me, a perfectly happy state of affairs.

And for any photographers who don't wish to have to go to sea to get good
shots of this normally pelagic species, better get down to Lorne before it
gets taken in!

Cheers, Sean

For those who are interested, there is a SGP at Lorne. It's being fed fish
around the pier. Wildlife carers are on there way and talking to Parks about
taking it into care. At present, it doesn't appear the bird is distressed.
It's taking food but it's wary of people.

Regards,

Simo.
