RFI - Hire cars in Darwin

Hi Colin

Unless intending to go to  Twin/Jim Jim falls (lots of additional km and you
could probably pay for a day tour) you definitely do not need a 4wd. Most of
Kakadu (Ubirr/Noulangie/Cooinda) is sealed road. Gunlom is gravel road but
I've always done it in a two wheel drive (towing a camper trailer) without
any problems (although conditions of hire may preclude this if you obey
them). Katherine Gorge, Edith falls are all sealed road, Umbrawarra gorge
near Pine Creek is worth visiting and is again gravel road but ok in a 2wd.
I've lived up here for 20 years without owning a 4wd (except an old Suburu I
parted with years ago) which is a sometimes limiting but there's plenty to
do in 10 days without one!

2000km over 10 days should do it

Hoping to get to Darwin in August. It seems that all hire cars come with
'pay by the kilometer' conditions. 

Does anyone know of any hire companies that have unlimited mileage in
NT?

I don't believe we'll need a 4WD but am happy to be advised otherwise if
someone knows better...generally intending to do the immediate area
around Darwin and Kakadu, probably Katherine Gorge too, for 10 days or
thereabouts...
