Sorry to be late reporting this, but I have had computer problems.

I was in Moree in north western NSW three weeks ago and am pretty sure I saw a
pair of grey falcons along the Mehi River just behind the golf course. I
would be interested to hear any comments people may have.

There is a large area of natural bushland there and two pale grey raptors flew
up out of a tree about 20 metres in front of me and then circled overhead. I
got a good view of the head of one of them as they took off. There were no
obvious facial markings but there was obvious yellow skin surrounding the eye.
The top of the head was rounded like a pigeon's, not the flatter silhouette of
a goshawk. I did not notice the beak. There was definitely no black on the
head or back, so I ruled out a peregrine falcon. A pale brown falcon would, I
think, still have a teardrop and it wasn't a kestrel.

In flight, one bird had faint, fine streaks on the breast, but the other seemed
to be plain. Their wings seemed a little broader than a brown falcon's and
came to a soft point. There were no fingers. The silhouette of the wings
was horizontal without even the hint of an arch in them.

It was hard to get a fix on size, but I felt they were about brown falcon size.

Has anyone heard of grey falcons in this area?

Cheers
Annabel Ashworth
