Your replies have elicited more information from the young cyclist.
Hi mum, I was hoping someone might be able to narrow down the range
of possibilities. Brown Goshawk definitely seems more likely than
Perigrine falcon (shape and colour). I wasn't looking at it through
binoculars but over my shoulder as I rode my bicycle. It was
certainly attacking and repeatedly for as long as I was in range.
ie. before some buildings got in its way. After the initial impact
on my helmet it continued soaring alongside me and swooping towards
me in a manner much more graceful than Magpies, and was more easily
deterred by simply waving one hand.
I have suggested he might like to join the forum. I think Stephen
Debus has narrowed it down to either the Brown Goshawk or the Collared
Sparrowhawk .
I wonder if there is a local birder who spends time around the Duck
River Auburn NSW and knows of this specific bird?
