G'day I was on my lunch time perambulation through the Spectacle
Garden in the Roma St Parklands [Brisbane] when I noticed an anger of
birds in the vicinity of a grove of "poplar" trees around a small pond
with a fountain near the western entrance to the garden.
Angers of birds are often productive so I had a look. A frazzled but
fresh plumaged Powerful Owl was perched about 6 metres up one of the
trees. Even without any visual aids, I could clearly see it's yellow
eyes, yellow feet, barred undertail and distinct black chevrons on its
underbody. This bird was reacting to the Butcherbirds and Mickies and
in doing so looked strangely tall, skinny and small-headed. When it
turned it's head side on to snap at its tormentors, its beak appeared
to be eagle-shaped.
I suspect the bird was an immature owl in unfamiliar surroundings [I
suspect an Adult would have ignored to pesky "peasants" surrounding it.]
It's the first time I've seen an owl within a kilometre of the GPO, so
posted a note on the local Birdline. I suspect the bird will push on,
but may choose lodgings in the area. There are certainly plenty of
possums about.
