Today I was startled to see a Silver Gull on a nest with two eggs on a
narrow nature strip beside a car park alongside the drive-through take-away
pick-up lane at MacDonald's restaurant in Frankston. It was partially hidden
at the base of a palm-type tree only half a metre from the wheels of patrons
cars. Only the day before I had photographed a newly fledged juvenile that
was settled in the gravel two metres from that spot. I assumed that it had
been reared in a nest on the roof of an adjacent building but now I'm not
sure about that. They are reported to nest on flat rooves in Frankston.
Wires now span the rooves to deter the gulls so perhaps this pair decided to
revert to a more usual site at ground level nearer their food source! As
foxes are common, I doubt that the nest will survive. Thinking the bird must
be injured, I investigated which produced angry squarks.
