I spent 6 great days birding around Lake Cargelligo last week together with several others despite the rains. Perhaps because of the rain & that some roads were not passable, some of the species that were expected based on the archives - thanks Dave Stowe, Frank Antram, Nevil Lazarus, Carl Weber, Ivan Chapman, Troy Mutton, Graham Turner, were not seen. Interesting bits were: Nombinnie & Round Hill NP's quiet. Missed Southern Scrub-robin & the Whistlers except the allways present Rufous. Ground Cuckoo-shrike & Banded Lapwing were on recently ploughed paddock near Murrin Bridge on Euabalong Rd. Euc flowering just starting at Mt Hope pub & Spiny Cheeked & Striped HEs, Little & Helmeted Friarbirds, Mallee Ringneck, Blubonnet & Major Mitchells concentrated here. At LC STP White-winged & Variegated F-Ws happily sharing the same little saltbush, preening & sun bathing. Also Baillions crakes very approachable.

But the rain slowed things down & I stopped for lunch at Kells Kitchen fast food van that sometimes touts for business beside the lake at LC. It is run by an older couple & their 30ish son. Mum & Dad were slaving over the stove & the washing up while son was lounging over the counter chatting to a nuggety 80 something cockie, skin so badly sun affected that it was just white scar tissue & eyes just sandy blight slits. Dad calls to son.
"What are you think ya doin Son?"
"Doin a bit of PR Dad"
"You're wastin your time Son, cant you see how old the bugger is."
Old cockie just blinks & specifies tomato sauce on his eggs.
The rain eased & back to the STP.
