AusBirders,

Interestingly there was an article recently in our local paper on the
decline of Little Penguins on Granite Island (Victor Harbor, SA). A census
has been done during August since 2001 and as you can see the numbers have
dropped dramatically by 90% since then:

2001    1548
2002    828
2003    588
2004    No valid data
2005    622
2006    586
2007    408
2008    354
2009    166
2010    146

No definite cause has been attributed to the decline but possible reasons
are climate change (seawater temperature changes) and the penguins have to
travel further for food sources, increase in the number of NZ Fur Seals in
the area and feral animals (cats).
