At dusk yesterday I heard a single Ground Parrot calling in wallum heath at
Peregian Beach on the Sunshine Coast. This is about 1km from where I heard 2
Ground Parrots calling recently, and in the general area where locals report
that even a decade ago, quite a few birds could be heard. The southern
portion of Noosa National Park appears to contain the southern most
population of this species in southeast Queensland if the birds, as
expected, have gone from their haunts at Marcoola and near Caloundra further
south. It appears that the authorities are doing little to protect this
remnant population unfortunately.
Also yesterday, a pair of Lewin's Rails were calling in the heath.
