This is somewhat 'off topic' but I hope the moderators are gentle with me.
I would just like to extend my feelings of sorrow and my psychological support to our Kiwi friends following the devastating
earthquake in the South Island last night.
New Zealand is a most beautiful country and I have wonderful memories from my
two visits there.
We may be enemies on the sporting field but I am sure that any conscious and thinking Aussie (I am confident there is more than a
couple) will be very concerned for the wellbeing of the NZers caught up in this far from inconsequential event.
Many Aussie birders visit New Zealand for the wonderful birds there so I am
sure that they, at least, feel some concern.
Which is more than I can say for at least one of our Australian TV news programs. At least one TV news broadcast producer considered
the record earthquake in New Zealand to be far less important than some pathetic fireworks event on the Brisbane River (Queensland,
Australia). Sheeessss!!
No wonder I am not fond of news reporters.
Australian birders should be aware that there is an Australian sporting team, the Australian Diamonds netball team, in New Zealand
at the moment (in the North Island). I hope the Diamonds win the game on Sunday (and the series) but I wait in anticipation to see
how they react to the earthquake in the South Island. I hope they don't let me down.
