I have this afternoon been advised that no birdwatching permits are to be
issued for the Mereenie Mt Winter area. This is very sad news indeed. The
reasons given by telephone were twofold - people had entered the area
without a permit and also the number of people seeking permission (around 80
telephone and internet enquiries) was overwhelming for the community.

Good Afternoon,

The Central Land Council has just received detailed advice from traditional
owners of the Mereenie - Mt Winter area. All permits for birdwatching for
this area will be refused.

Traditional owners have requested that police question all people visiting
this region and determine if they have a valid permit. It is an offence
under the land rights act to be on Aboriginal land without a valid permit.
Hefty fines apply.

Regards

Jaide Warner
