Hi all,
I'll be in Alice for a conference from Wed 26 - Fri 28 May and will have
a small amount of time for some birdwatching on the first afternoon and
on the morning of Sat 29th before catching my flight home (departure
13.30h).
I'm planning to spend a couple of hours at Olive Pink botanic gardens on
the Wednesday afternoon, but am seeking local advice on how to make the
most of my time on Saturday morning.
I visited Alice once previously (a 24-hour work trip 2 years ago) and
managed to see only what was around at the Desert Knowledge Precinct and
the Desert Park as well as an early morning hour at the sewage works.
This time I'm keen to try to get out a bit further, e.g. to Kunnoth Bore
or Santa Teresa Road if possible.
My main target birds are:
Western Bowerbird
Grey-headed Honeyeater
Slaty-backed Thornbill
any local grasswrens
Rufous-crowned Emu-wren
Banded Whiteface
Grey Honeyeater
Pied Honeyeater
Chiming Wedgebill
Cinnamon Quail-thrush
Any suggestions on best options, any recent knowledge on the likelihood
of some of the less resident birds in the area, or even car hire
options, would be very much appreciated. And if anyone local is willing
to take an out of town birder for a morning jaunt I'd love to hear from
you (happy to contribute to costs).
And thanks to all Birding-ausers who have submitted posts and trip
reports on the area - a truly invaluable resource.
