Members of Birds Qld, BA Capricornia and Makay BOCA joined forces for a
bird-filled Easter weekend at the St. Lawrence wetlands. Folk travelling to and
from enjoyed sightings of the Capricorn Yellow Chat en-route south of
Rockhampton. Furthermore the neighbouring beaches of Carmila and Clairview
satisfied the wader watchers with especially a good view of a flock of Little
Terns. A drive to the mountain ranges offered ample opportunity for bush birds
and the very special sighting of 3 Crimson Finches. But for most of us it was
the wetlands camp that had us enthralled.
To waken to the call of the Blue-winged and Laughing Kookaburras competing and
look out of your tent to see the sunrise colours as hundreds of Magpie Geese
v’ed the sky and Brolgas trumpeted nearby suggested that I had travelled much
further than just a 2hr drive north of Rockhampton. The wetlands were teeming
with Whistling Duck and their young which the Brown Falcons and Swamp Harrier
did more than just “eye” while we watched on. Also a few Radjah Shelduck and
Cotton Pygmy Geese glided through. Many of us saw the resident Black Bittern
stalking the fishways by the causeway road. Around camp, Yellow Honeyeaters,
Helmeted Friarbird and White-bellied Cuckoo Shrike shared our shady trees and
Bar-breasted Honey-eaters nested in Melaleuca .
Many thanks to Alan Briggs and Mike West for organizing this event. I strongly
recommend if people are heading north to escape the colder climes to drop into
St. Lawrence and enjoy the hospitality of the townsfolk and the birdlife of
this central coastal area.
