Thanks Mick, a good effort, but just because you didn't find it I don't think you locals should give up on the search. It is MARCH and it may have found a quiet spot in a rock cleft to moult. I once saw a group of birders walk within 5 m of a moulting Erect-crested Penguin on a beach on Phillip Island without noticing it. Summerland Beach on Victoria's Phillip Island, famous for Little Penguins, is the site of the only previous Australian record of Magellanic Penguin. That was found dead on 31 MARCH 1976. The two New Zealand records I know of were in MARCH 1972 & MARCH 1990. Both were moulting and very tame, readily taking fish from the hand.
