You say colourful. Is it possible that they are picking at red patches
on the towels, that look like bits of meat or bloodied objects or other
things that look like pictures of animals. That would be my guess.

Hello birders,
Currawongs are starting to "mass" again in Fearnley Park, Beecroft, NSW,
behind our back yard, as they seem to do twice a year.
Puzzled as to why a couple of them several times, on different days,
have flown onto our clothesline and then clutching, clambered over a
damp, colourful beach towel, "picking" at it. Trying for threads,
or.......what??? Even swinging from it, as though 'playing'. They don't
seem to go for other garments.
