For the past two weeks or so I have noticed an increase in certain
vocalisations here in the Samford Valley, SEQ. The migrant Cicadabirds,
Channel-bill's, Koels and even the mind nummingly repetative Brush Cuckoos are
definately slowing down. But some residents seem to be on the up-tick
specifically, Bush-Hen, Owlet-Nightjar and White-throated Nightjars.
Last year at this time, I heard Bush-Hen for about two or three weeks,
throughout the day, even when it was over 30 degrees, but then not a peep the
rest of the year. Now again, at the same time of the year to the week, I can
hear one from the same area below my house. This is only my second full year
at this property, so I am currious if this is a regular occurance and if this
is "out of" or "in season" for Bush-Hens to be calling?
Night time vocalisations for two resident species are also increasing. I have
not heard Owlet-Nightjar at night since November, but for the past few weeks I
have been hearing both the scream and call notes until bed-time. I know they
have been around as I have a stakeout Owlet-Nightjar that suns itself next to
the house and I hear him and a neighbour scream occassionaly throughout the
day, but have heard nothing at night for some time.
I still flush White-throated Nightjar from the trails on my block, but have not
heard them since October and now they are starting to call again.
When I lived in the US I would often hear the year's young "practicing" as the
day's shortened and cooled off, some speices would give spring time calls,
prusumaly due to similar conditions. I am currious if anyone else is
experiencing the same thing?
