Hi,

This maybe a boring topic about Pied Currawong to some.

I always thought the white crescent over base of tail near upper tail covert is
a diagnostic feature for Pied Currawong whereas Grey Currawong have uniform
black/grey all over near the rump.

On Fri 08/01/2010 in one of Canberra NW suburb, I observed 2 individuals, but
photographed one Currawong which did not show any signs of white at base of
tail. Other than this, the bill shape and size lean towards Pied.

Later on Mon 11/01/2010 I checked the site and there were numerous number of
Pied Currawongs (as usual) and some showed very narrow or broken white crescent
on base of tail. Otherwise they sang just like typical Pied. So I am now
confused if the birds I photographed on Fri were Grey Currawong?

Too bad I did not hear the bird call while taking photo of it and I was not
familiar with Grey's call either.

Is this different form of Pied Currawong or simply aberrant individuals that
are different from the usual Pied Currawong in Sydney?

Photos of the Currawong is found in following link

Thanks.

[On the other note, there had been an irruption of Superb Parrots around NW
suburbs of Canberra which ended about last week. This was not much mentioned in
this forum]
