As we are at present living at Mt Liebig Aboriginal Community along the Gary
Junction Highway I ducked along to Jupiter Well to see if I could spot some
Princess Parrots and especially to photograph them as I have seen them before.
Stayed Monday to Thursday last week and saw only 2 birds 2km west of Nyinmy
Outstation and then on Thursday morning 4 birds at Jupiter Well itself. I
carefully checked other known areas but drew a blank. Only distant photos
obtained so I guess unfinished business with these birds. I'll have to go back.
At the moment the roads out here are appalling and now officially closed
because of the heavy rains across central Australia. I only just made it home
by 1.00am. Always disconcerting when the water is so deep the headlights go
under and you are driving in total darkness until you emerge.
An unexpected bird was a Yellow-billed Spoonbill standing on the derelict bore
at Nyinmy Outstation. I passed an Oriental Plover on the road 45 east of
Kiwirrkurra. The Kiwirrkurra people claim to be the most remote Aboriginal
Community in Australia. Then 75km east of Jupiter Well one Fork-tailed Swift
went through.
